Pogo, the Aussie video, music, and magic maker creates yet another wonder that will grasp your attention, hold it, and hypnotize you in his Youtube video short: The Wizard of Meh. This creation lasts for one minute and thirty-seven seconds, leaving you wishing there was a little more to exhilarate your senses. The Wizard of Meh is simplistic, surprising, and delightful.
The music is a mixture of sound snippets from the classic and beloved film The Wizard of Oz. One can make out the random chorus of the Munchkins among the slight soundbites of Dorothy’s bewitching voice. The background music is also concoction of favorite songs from the timeless film. When arranged together, the listener hears the happy, frolicking tune as it intwines itself with the orginal graphics of the montage that goes along with the cheery tune.
The visuals from the video consist of a man, shoulders up. They are put together so that the viewer sees the man in an array of different poses and costumes: sometimes he is wearing a hat, other times he is smoking a pipe. In some segments, he is gazing nostalgically, almost as though he were assessing his audience. At other points in the video, he is nodding his head thoughtfully to the music. He often mouths the words included in the musical mix as though he were singing them himself. Perhaps the most original touch is the usage of black and white film, giving the video an almost antiquated feel.
Pogo pieces these snippets, soundbites, and cuts of video into a brilliantly hypnotizing addition to his already fascinating collection of videos. If you appreciate the artistic value of audio and visuals combined into one masterpiece, then watch Pogo’s The Wizard of Meh.
