5 of the Best Places in America to Get a Great Hot Dog
By Kaylan Haddican – Muze Staff Writer
Some of us might be ashamed to admit it, but we all love them – hot dogs. There is just something about those casings stuffed with meat trimmings, fat, and sodium nitrate that keeps us coming back for more. The traditional toppings for a delicious frank are typically ketchup and mustard, but these five restaurants know how to do the dog best.
- Nathan’s – Coney Island and Brooklyn, New York
-
Nathan’s – Coney Island and Brooklyn, New YorkThe sponsor of the annual Hot Dog Eating Contest held on the 4th of July, Nathan’s is the epitome of the American hot dog. Though the restaurant offers burgers and Philly cheesesteaks, hot dogs are first on the menu. Crown it with a variety of toppings: chili, cheese, sauerkraut, red onions, and salsa (to name a few). You can find Nathan’s hot dogs in the meat department at your local grocery store.
- Nogales Hot Dogs – Phoenix, Arizona
-
Nogales Hot Dogs – Phoenix, ArizonaThe Sonoran hot dog is indigenous to Arizona, and it is one of the most popular styles in the state. The hot dog is wrapped in bacon and put into a bun pocket, then topped with tomatoes, cheese, onions, pinto beans, and salsa or chili sauce. Unique and tasty!
- The Dogg Haus – Milwaukee, Wisconsin
-
The Dogg Haus – Milwaukee, WisconsinWith a few downtown locations, nothing is better than The Dogg Haus after a night out on the town. With a variety of special dogs, as well as a build-your-own menu, there is sure to be something for everyone. Be sure to try the Wisconsin, smothered in three different cheeses, or if you’re into a more traditional flavor, the Chicago is sure to please.
- Pink’s Hot Dogs – Los Angeles, California
-
Pink’s Hot Dogs – Los Angeles, CaliforniaSince 1939, Pink’s has been dishing out delicious dogs to the people of Los Angeles. Though there is a small burger menu, everything else that is up for eats is a hot dog; everything on the Specials and Super Specials menu is, in fact, a frank. The joint has also been visited by quite a few stars, including Henry Winkler, David Hasselhof, Tom Hanks, and Betty White. You can’t tell me you wouldn’t want to eat in the same establishment as The Hof.
- Portillo’s – Chicago, Illinois
-
Portillo’s – Chicago, IllinoisYou can’t make a Top Hot Dog list and not include a restaurant noted for the infamous Chicago dog. Laid to rest in a poppyseed bun, the Chicago dog is topped with mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, kosher pickle, sport peppers, and mustard. Don’t put any ketchup on this weenie!
