Brand Yourself Wisconsin: Three things we like about Sconnie
By Nastassia Putz – Muze Staff Writer
Searching for a “less hokey way” to show off your state pride and support local teams. Sconnie Nation contracted by Underground Printing has one trendy solution for Wisconsinites. With tons of variations on shirts, hoodies, pants and accessories, the Sconnie movement, born in spring 2004, still charges forward, according to co-founder Troy Vosseller.
“What we wanted to do is really channel that pride that a lot of Wisconsinites have in their state … and embrace that,” said Vosseller. Here are a few things worth highlighting:
No. 1 The man still behind the brand—Brown Deer native and UW-Madison graduate Troy Vosseller had a dream. His dream was not far from the typical daydream of any college student looking to make a few extra dollars.
However, Vosseller and dorm buddy Ben Fiechtner made it happen. The two guys became friends and soon devised plans ranging from exclusive dating sites for UW-Madison students to reselling gas for mopeds on school grounds.
The victor however, Sconnie Nation—a brand and movement that “celebrates the Wisconsin lifestyle” according to Vosseller. As of three years ago, Vosseller took complete control of the company and has continued to embrace its concepts. According to him, the word Sconnie encompasses everything that is Wisconsin such as beer, cheese, brats, bowling, Packers, Brewers and more.
So with $600 and 100 shirts sold out of a dorm room, a nation of Sconnie lovers were born.
No. 2 The threads
The original tee — still the best seller today! Simple, comfortable and traditionally Sconnie.
The girlfriend pick — “Bella Off-Shoulder Long Sleeve Tee” or the “Sconnie Flowy LS Tee” gives girls the option of looking trendy while representing their hometown. Prideful and cute.
The hat/fanny pack—“Sconnie Capsac” designed for anyone that likes the idea of a fanny pack but hates the look. Convenient yet different.
The women’s panties —“Hard To Be Humble Boy Briefs” sport the slogan “it’s hard to be humble when you’re from Wisconsin” on the rear. This bold statement is best suited for a quirky girl not afraid to show off her team spirit—and buttocks.
The beer drinker’s fingerless gloves — “Sconnie Red Drinking Gloves” provide an easy grip while shielding hands from cold cans and brisk Wisconsin weather.
No. 3 And of course, the beer itself—“Sconnie Beer” is a local fit for Wisconsinites looking to pull out and pair up a beer with their drinking gloves. According to Vosseller, it’s an American lager and perfect companion to anyone tailgating, grilling out, golfing or boating. Brewed in Monroe, Wis., and launched this past April in Madison, Sconnie Beer can be found on tap and in 16-ounce cans at local suppliers throughout Madison, Janesville, Wisconsin Dells, Baraboo and as of July, Milwaukee.
