Just as Rice delivered Australia’s opening gold medal in Beijing, she is the hot hope to go back-to-back in the 400m individual medley final early tomorrow morning (Sunday, Australian time) when the eight-day spectacle at the pool starts to unfold.

Rice will take it as a compliment because it is exactly how she sees herself after gulping in “the energy spike of Olympic adrenalin” for the big stage she loves.

“Others (rivals) are like ‘there’s too much on the line’. I’m like…’let’s put it all on the line’,” Rice said of her hard-edged racer’s make-up.
